Hypoglycemia

The commonest complication associated with diabetes management, the development of hypoglycemia is an ever present possibility in all patients treated with insulin or OHAs.

It should be widely appreciated that the occurrence of severe hypoglycemia can lead to mortality, or serious morbidity such as permanent neurologic sequel, visual loss due to retinal bleeds, cardiovascular catastrophes, renal shutdown, etc.

Repeated episodes of even mild to moderate hypoglycemia can, also, lead to these severe morbid sequel

Hypoglycemic should be avoided, or at least recognized in the very early stages, so that prompt corrective action can avert any serious consequences.

  • Patients at High Risk for hypoglycemia
  • Classical Signs and Symptoms of Hypoglycemia
  • Non classical manifestations of Hypoglycemia
  • Absence of sympathoadrenal signs and symptoms in patients with Hypoglycemia.
  • Nocturnal Hypoglycemia
  • Common precipitating factors for Hypoglycemia
  • Management
  • Hypoglycemia Unawareness

Long term complications

"Whilst it is not clear whether long-term complications in diabetics can be prevented, it is generally accepted that early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention will avert, or significantly retard the relentless progression of, these complications, even if one is unable to reverse them."

"Treatment interventions imply not only good glycemic control, but, as importantly, optimizing body weight, managing hypertension, lipid abnormalities and other abnormal metabolic parameters. Certain other treatment options may be specific to a complication."
